Since May 22, the sale and use of plastic straws in Galapagos is banned. This is the one of the four plastic products that will not be able to enter the Archipelago since Tuesday to reduce contamination.
In addition to plastic straws, the introduction of t-shirt sleeves, polyethylene containers and non-returnable bottles will be progressively banned through Governmental Ordinance for permanent residents, temporary residents, tourists and bystanders.
The Government Council for the Special Regime of Galapagos emphasized that the initiative is based on "environmental reasons and public health and will be based on current regulations that have not been applied rigorously." He stressed that the main goal is to protect the unique fauna and flora of the Enchanted Islands.
The Galapagos National Park reflected that the measure will help preserve the ecosystem.
He emphasized that during the first four months of the following year they have collected 22 tons of plastic waste through Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Floreana and Santiago.
