First of all the problem had to be detected: “The giant tortoises didn’t born naturally because the black rats ate the eggs,” Rueda said. These rats came in the nineteenth century, causing a terrible problem in the turtles’ bith rate.
For this reason, in 2012, a helicopter was used to spread rat poison on Pinzon Island, two 2 years later, the island was free of rats, and the turtles were able to reproduce. After 100 years, the giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands were able to born naturally, and scientists believe they have actually left the category “in danger of extinction”.
