Since May 22, the sale and use of plastic straws in Galapagos is banned. This is the one of the four plastic products that will not be able to enter the Archipelago since Tuesday to reduce contamination.

In addition to plastic straws, the introduction of t-shirt sleeves, polyethylene containers and non-returnable bottles will be progressively banned through Governmental Ordinance for permanent residents, temporary residents, tourists and bystanders.

The Government Council for the Special Regime of Galapagos emphasized that the initiative is based on "environmental reasons and public health and will be based on current regulations that have not been applied rigorously." He stressed that the main goal is to protect the unique fauna and flora of the Enchanted Islands.

The Galapagos National Park reflected that the measure will help preserve the ecosystem.
He emphasized that during the first four months of the following year they have collected 22 tons of plastic waste through Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Floreana and Santiago.
Since Tuesday, May 22nd, the sale and use of plastic straws in Galapagos Islands is prohibited.
This is the one of the four-plastic single-use products that will not be able to enter the archipelago from this year, to avoid plastic pollution.

In addition to plastic straws – progressively until August – the introduction of t-shirt sleeves, polyethylene containers and non-returnable bottles will be prevented. This is part of a Governmental ordinance for permanent residents, temporary residents, tourists and bystanders.
“Galapagos for a culture without plastics” is the initiative that was approved in February 2015 by the Government Council for the Special Regime of Galapagos.

For us it is important to protect our beloved Enchanted Islands. For this reason, to strengthen our commitment to the environment, we avoid the use of short life cycle products to minimize contamination; we promote the sustainable reuse of organic waste, and we have a wastewater treatment system with environmental quality standards. Additionally, we have arranged exclusive itineraries, so you can visit the Enchanted Islands at its best.
